Locking Devices

Locking devices are generally determined by the type of door you have. Here are the basics:

Hardware for magnetic locks?

If the Magnetic lock is going to be on the exterior of the door it’s highly recommended to use the Secure I/O on the secure side of the door.

Basics of Installation

The installation process is quite similar to setting up CCTV cameras on a building.

The Actatek reader gets mounted on the wall next to the door you want to secure, not on the door itself. Generally a hole the diameter of a dime needs to be drilled through the wall.  A 12VDC power cable (included), a Cat5 network cable, and relay wires are ran to the reader through that wall hole. The power cable gets plugged into an outlet on the secure side of the door (or most often wired directly into the buildings power grid). The Cat5 cable gets run from the reader to the building’s network switch or Hub.  A relay circuit is run from the reader to the locking device installed on the door frame. Separate 12VDC power is run to the Reader and the locking device.

Does the Actatek have to be networked to a switch or hub?

No the unit can work stand alone. You would need to enroll users and set access schedule right at the unit itself or from a desktop using Access Manager.

What happens in a power outage?

It depends on the locking device and if you have power backups. In the case of a total blackout the reader and strike will be offline. The electric strike can be set in always open or always locked status when it gets in stalled. (Consult local 1st responders/fire codes for settings). If you are using magnetic locks you will need to have a backup power source. If power is cut to the Reader or the Magnet lock the door will be open and unsecure. No data will be lost as the reader has a non-volatile memory.

Can the readers be connected via Wi-Fi?

Yes by using a separately sold Wi-Fi Bridge that mounts on the secure side of the wall. Wi-Fi networking is dependent on how far the Wi-Fi Bridge is from the switch or hub of the network. We recommend using Cat5 hard wiring connection in most cases.

Can the Reader use PoE for power and networking?

Yes but that is evaluated by our tech staff on a case by case basis and again, we recommend using Cat5 hard wiring connection in most cases.
